Australian Police Confirm Bondi Beach Attack Was ISIL-Inspired Terror Incident
Australian authorities have confirmed that the deadly shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach is being investigated as a terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State (ISIL). The incident occurred during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration and resulted in 15 fatalities and at least 25 injuries, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in Australia in nearly 30 years.
What Happened at Bondi Beach?
According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), two male suspects — believed to be a father and son — opened fire on a large crowd gathered at the beachfront festival. The attack reportedly lasted around 10 minutes and caused widespread panic at one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.
One of the suspects, a 50-year-old man, was shot dead by police at the scene. His 24-year-old son was also shot and is currently in critical condition in hospital.
Terrorism Investigation Underway
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that early evidence indicates the attackers were ideologically motivated by ISIL, emphasizing that the incident should not be associated with any religion.
“This appears to be a terrorist act carried out by individuals aligned with an extremist organization, not a religious community,” Barrett said during a press briefing.
Police recovered homemade ISIL flags and an improvised explosive device from the suspects’ vehicle, strengthening the terrorism-related investigation.
Suspects’ Philippines Trip Raises Concerns
Authorities also confirmed that the suspects had traveled to the Philippines last month, a detail that is now a key focus of the investigation. Law enforcement agencies in both Australia and the Philippines are cooperating to determine whether the trip had any connection to extremist networks.
ISIL-linked groups have previously operated in parts of southern Philippines, particularly in Mindanao, although their influence has significantly declined since the 2017 Marawi siege.
National Mourning and Security Response
In the aftermath of the attack, mourners gathered at Bondi Pavilion, leaving flowers and messages in memory of the victims. Australian officials have increased security at public events nationwide, while community leaders have called for unity and calm.
The Bondi Beach shooting has reignited national discussions around counterterrorism, public safety, and extremist radicalization.
